The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, reported this Friday that "the construction of 440 homes in Lanzarote is already scheduled, 134 of which are already under construction with an estimated completion date for 2025".

"We are fully aware of the housing emergency situation in the Canary Islands and, especially, on the island of Lanzarote, where there are more than 1,800 people registered in the housing applicant registry," Rodríguez declared in a statement.

"That is why, back in October of last year, we approved a Shock Plan, with a comprehensive approach, to respond to the needs of citizens and, as I have already announced, we will also approve a decree law of urgent measures regarding housing, in addition to proceeding with the modification of the decree that regulates the procedure for awarding public promotion homes to simplify the procedure," he added.

Rodríguez detailed that "of the 440 homes planned on the island, 134 are already under construction with an estimated completion date for 2025; 67 are in the approval phase for the bidding of the works; 166 are in the bidding phase for the projects" and, furthermore, the Canarian Housing Institute "is processing with the Island Council the transfer of plots in the municipalities of Yaiza and Arrecife for the construction of the rest".

During his speech in a parliamentary commission, the minister pointed out that the decree law of urgent measures regarding housing contains "two important groups of measures: some aimed at increasing the availability of land and the use of buildings for housing and others, implemented to promote, boost and facilitate the construction of protected housing".

In the statement, the Canarian Government explained that this regulation also includes a series of mandates that respond to the objective of direct application and procedural simplification, such as the reduction from six to three months in the declaration of urgency in order to reduce the deadlines in the fulfillment of procedures and administrative procedures, or the declaration of public utility and social interest of public promotion housing construction projects for expropriatory purposes, among others.

"With all these measures in place, and others that we are already working on, we are convinced that we will be able to tackle this housing crisis and respond to the need, not only current but also future, of Canarian society," Rodríguez assured.
