The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, expressed last Tuesday his willingness to build 1,000 homes for "affordable" rent for families with a maximum income of 32,400 euros, with a completion deadline in 2026, which will be possible thanks to the sum of European, state and regional funds.

Torres referred to this issue in the plenary session of the Regional Parliament in response to a question from the deputy of Nueva Canarias, Carmen Hernández, regarding the impact of the signing in Madrid of the Housing Rehabilitation Plan for the Canary Islands.

In this regard, Carmen Hernández, who is also the mayor of the Gran Canaria municipality of Telde, stressed that the Canary Islands is the first community to sign a plan in this area with European funds, which will allow rehabilitating more than 2,300 homes with "an important novelty" imposed by the EU, that of assuming energy efficiency criteria.

The president has admitted that when the community provision to condition homes to preserve the environment and promote energy efficiency was known, there was a "rebellion", but finally all administrations have joined the need to commit to self-sufficient buildings
