The Government Council of the Canary Islands, has given the green light during its meeting this Monday to the project of 'Law of Sustainable Management of the Tourist Use of Housing', announced by the Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, in her appearance in the Parliament of the Canary Islands last September.
The creation of the new law will serve to regulate phenomena such as vacation rentals, currently regulated in the archipelago by a regulation (Decree 113/2015) that does not establish quantitative or qualitative limits, so the autonomous government emphasizes that the regulations will be promoted to find the "balance" between the resident and the tourist.
It also recalls that the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in 2020 that the protection of the right to decent housing and the urban environment justify the intervention of regional and local authorities to regulate the tourist use of housing and in the Canary Islands there are currently 46,486 vacation homes.
In addition to addressing the right to decent housing, the future law will be cross-cutting and will include aspects ranging from urban planning and land management, the environment and, above all, the definition of a model of sustainable development for the Canary Islands in the immediate future, according to a note from the Executive.
With the approval of this Monday, the opening of a public consultation phase begins, where citizens will have the opportunity to express their opinion on what should be the future of the regulation of the tourist use of housing. Based on the information collected, an articulated text will be drafted.
The Government's objective is that the elaboration of this law has the maximum participation of all agents and sectors of society, due to its importance for the current development model.
The Director General of Planning, Training and Tourism Promotion, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, will present the main elements of the consultation together with the essential aspects that are intended to be addressed and at the end of the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to ask their questions.
Thus, anyone who wishes to do so, within a period of one month, can make their contributions to the normative text on the Government website. Public information sessions will be held on each of the islands, and in Lanzarote, the calls will begin on October 27 at the Lancelot Hotel in Arrecife between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
