Lanzarote wines have achieved three awards at the 2023 Bacchus Awards, two at “España Selección” and one at the National Wine Competition for Small D.O’s, six awards that position the D.O. Wines from Lanzarote in a prestigious ranking at a national level.

The International Bacchus Competition, one of the most important events held on the continent, took place in Madrid and brought together the largest group of world-class professionals to blindly taste the 1700 entries submitted, from 16 countries. The wines El Grifo, George Glas (El Grifo), Martinón Blanco Seco (Martinón) were worthy of the Bacchus Gold distinction. For its part, Lágrima de Malvasía Volcánica Blanco Seco (Lágrima de Malvasía Volcánica) received a Bacchus Silver.

In its XXI edition, the International Bacchus Competition has established itself as a quality event due to the level of its participants and the rigor of its blind tastings. The Spanish Union of Tasters (UEC), chaired by Fernando Gurucharri, managed to bring together Masters of Wine to lead a panel of 80 tasters, among whom were the most influential opinion leaders on the planet, from 25 countries.

España Selección and Small D.O.'s

On the other hand, also in April, the fifth edition of the “España Selección” wine competition was held in Ciudad Real. Bodegas Martinón once again took to the podium to be awarded on this occasion with a Silver Medal for its reference Martinón Blanco Seco.

In this wine competition, conceived by Wine Connection with the aim of enhancing the prestige of national native varieties, records were broken, both in the number of references in the competition (225), and in the number of varieties presented, achieving up to 30 different ones. A committee composed of 20 professionals, chaired by the prestigious oenologist Pedro Sarrión Martínez, assessed the wines in strict order according to category, variety and sugar level, where applicable.

For its part, Bodegas La Grieta managed to position itself with a Gold in the National Wine Competition of Small D.O’s 2023, with its reference La Grieta Tinto (night harvest 2021). This event took place in the city of Lerma (Burgos), capital of the Small D.O. Arlanza. And, it is held with the aim of giving the widest possible dissemination to the wineries of the Small D.O.’s.

It should be noted that, since the beginning of the year, the wineries belonging to the designation of origin of the island have obtained several awards and recognitions for their great nobility, thus consolidating a great medal table for the Wines of Lanzarote.

All the competitions demonstrate the quality of the island's wine product, for this reason the Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin Wines of Lanzarote congratulates the wineries Martinón, El Grifo, Lágrima de Malvasía Volcánica and La Grieta for “their magnificent work and great work in positioning Lanzarote as a benchmark in the wine sector at a national level.”
