The El Grifo winery in Lanzarote has won four awards for four of its wines in the latest edition of the Mundial de Vinos Extremos, held in Rome.

This is the most prestigious competition in the world for productions of the so-called 'heroic' viticulture, which refers to vineyards cultivated under conditions of extreme difficulty.

El Grifo won a Grand Gold Medal for its Ariana wine, from 2021, as well as three gold medals for Lías (2018), Canari (1982) and Orange Wine (2021).

The Canary archipelago as a whole received 36 awards: 9 Grand Gold Medals, 23 Gold Medals and 4 special distinctions.

The director of the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA) Luis Arráez collected the award with which Canary Islands was recognized as the wine-growing area with the highest number of wines submitted to the competition.

In that sense, Arráez highlighted the participation of the archipelago in this competition, "which places us on the map of extreme viticulture, characterized by production in mountainous or terraced regions, with more than 30% slope, altitudes above 500 meters or small islands".

Thus, continued the director of the ICCA, "we make visible the great number of microclimates of the Archipelago and our enormous varietal richness, in addition to the cultivation in volcanic spaces unique in the world".
