Employment and unemployment increased in the Canary Islands in 2023

The number of employed increased by 19,100 people in the Canary Islands in the last quarter of 2023, that is, 1.91% compared to the previous quarter, and 2.64% more than those counted at the end of 2022, according to data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) released this Friday by the INE.

The number of unemployed remained at 196,400, 9.57% more than those counted between July and September 2023 and 16.18% more than those registered at the end of 2022.

The apparent paradox between the increase in employment and unemployment at the same time is due to the growth of the active population. People who for various reasons decided not to look for a job, now find the labor market attractive. The active population has increased by more than 600,000 people in Spain in the last year.

Thus, the Canary Islands closed last year with 26,100 more employed than those registered in the last quarter of 2022, which meant that this group was made up of 1,016,900 people.

Of the total number of employed with which the archipelago ended in 2023, 9,600 were between 16 and 19 years old; 46,700, from 20 to 24; 210,500, from 25 to 34; 255,500, from 35 to 44; 293,100, from 45 to 54; and 201,400 were 55 years or older.

The unemployed were 196,400, 9.57% more than those counted between July and September 2023 and 16.18% more than those registered at the end of 2022.

Of those 196,400 unemployed, 1,400 belonged to agriculture, 27,000 to industry, 79,500 to construction and 107,800 were people looking for their first job or who had left their previous job more than a year ago.

The assets reached 1,213,200 people, 2.3% more than those registered in the third quarter of 2023 and 4.61% more than those counted at the end of 2022.

With a population over 16 years of age of 2,004,200 people, 49,800 more than those counted at the end of 2022, the Canary Islands ended last year with an activity rate of 60.53% and an unemployment rate of 16.19%.

The number of inactive people reached 791,000 in 2023, a group made up of 799,000 people (8,000 more) at the end of 2022 and which includes students, retirees, those who dedicate themselves to housework, those who suffer from a permanent disability or those who receive a pension other than retirement.
