The UK Government updated its travel recommendations this Monday and has advised against all non-essential travel to Spain, including the Canary and Balearic Islands, due to the "risks" posed by the coronavirus pandemic situation in the country. Thus, far from rectifying the measures announced this weekend, the British executive has hardened them, now including the two archipelagos in the destinations to avoid.

In addition, it will also maintain the quarantine for travelers returning from Spain, despite the Spanish Government's attempts to at least keep the Canary and Balearic Islands out of this measure.

"This advice is based on evidence of increasing cases of COVID-19 in many regions, but particularly in Aragon, Navarra and Catalonia, which include the cities of Zaragoza, Pamplona and Barcelona," he said in a statement.

In addition, he said that he "does not advise those who are already in Spain to leave at this time" and has recommended that these tourists "follow the advice of local authorities on how to best protect themselves and others, including any measures they put in place to control the virus."

The British Government has also stressed that those people who return to the country from Spain will have to enter quarantine, although it has reiterated that the travel recommendation does not imply advice to "shorten" the visit.
