Lanzarote ended February with 19,872 unemployed, 752 more than the previous month, which represents an increase of 3.9%, according to figures from the Canary Islands Employment Observatory published by the Cabildo Data Center.
In addition, compared to 2020, unemployment has grown by 77.3%. And it is that, in February of last year there were 11,207 unemployed on the island.
Unemployment has grown in all municipalities, with the largest increase recorded in Arrecife, which ended February with 10,143 unemployed, 376 more than the previous month. The capital of Lanzarote is followed by Yaiza, where unemployment has increased by 106 people, reaching 2,210 unemployed.
In Tías, the number of unemployed has increased by 98 people, ending February with 2,249 unemployed; while San Bartolomé closed the month with 2,150 unemployed, 86 more than in January; and Teguise did so with 1,933, which represents an increase of 64 people.
For its part, Haría had 545 unemployed at the end of February, 14 more than the previous month; and Tinajo 642, eight more than in January.
Unemployment by sectors
By sectors, the largest increase in unemployment has occurred in the hotel industry, where there were 6,262 unemployed at the end of February, 388 more than the previous month. In commerce there are 3,095 unemployed with an increase of 139 people, while in the construction sector there are 1,390 unemployed, 46 more than in January.
In industry, unemployment rose by 11 people in February, reaching 462 unemployed; while agriculture remained unchanged, with 177 unemployed.
In the rest of the services there were 7,380 unemployed at the end of February, 143 more than a month before; while classified as without economic activity there were 1,106 unemployed people, 25 more than in January.
Unemployment also increases in the Canary Islands
In the Canary Islands as a whole, unemployment grew by 4,247 people in February to reach 283,477 unemployed, which represents an increase of 1.52% compared to the previous month and 36.39% compared to February 2020.
