The Chinese giant of e-commerce JD.com, known as the Chinese Amazon, has acquired 57.1% of the shares of Ceconomy, the German company that owns Mediamarkt and Saturn. In this way, the only Mediamarkt store in Lanzarote, located in Arrecife, will pass into the hands of this company based in Beijing. This operation occurs less than a year after this store opened its doors in the Argana neighborhood.
Ceconomy, the largest consumer electronics chain in Europe, is now mostly managed by the JD.com platform, which was created in 1998. In this way, the Asian giant will compete in the European market with brands such as Amazon, in a context of uncertainty due to the increase in tariffs from the United States.
JD.com will assume ownership of the seven stores in the Canary Islands, 112 stores in Spain and around a thousand stores in different areas of European geography.
This electronic distribution company has "a high degree of robotization", according to elEconomista.es, and uses algorithms based on artificial intelligence to manage the products available and in its logistics. Among its characteristics, JD.com promises ultra-fast deliveries, where products can reach the consumer in less than 24 hours after purchase.
