A fire declared this Friday in a home on José Ortega y Gasset street, in Arrecife, has left a woman with cognitive disabilities homeless and has caused the death of her dog, which was inside the property, the Consortium of Emergencies has reported.

The fire originated around 2:30 PM in a small attic, distributed in a room and kitchen. Personnel from the Security and Emergency Consortium were dispatched to the scene, who upon arrival found the flames spread throughout a large part of the dwelling.

Although the firefighters managed to extinguish the fire in a short time, the property was left practically burnt out and in a state of total loss. The owner lost most of her belongings and personal effects.

The woman was not in the dwelling at the time of the fire, so she was unharmed. However, emergency teams could not save her pet, a dog that died as a result of the fire.

Sources from the emergency services indicated that the affected person is in a situation of special vulnerability after losing her only home. Social services are now studying the necessary measures to guarantee her care and possible rehousing.
