The Civil Guard has celebrated this Wednesday a commemorative event in the municipality of Teguise, presided over by the colonel chief of the Las Palmas Command, alongside the government's deputy delegate, and with the attendance of the mayor of Teguise, the president of the Lanzarote island council, the island's insular director, and the defense delegate in Las Palmas.
The event began at 10:00 AM with the arrival of the presiding authority, after which the reading of the Foundational Decree for the creation of the Corps proceeded. Next, during the development of the military ceremony, a total of seven Guardia Civil Merit decorations with white insignia and one Military Merit Cross were awarded.
In this same framework, an honorable mention has also been given to local police officer Simeón, from the municipality of Teguise, in recognition of his great dedication and services rendered on the island of La Graciosa. Likewise, the professional careers of three civil guards have been recognized by presenting them with a diploma in gratitude for the services performed during their careers.
Finally, after the singing of the anthem, the ceremony has concluded with a parade along the Constitution Square, in which both the formed personnel and various motorized units have participated.
In his address, the Colonel Chief of the Command of Las Palmas has highlighted that the Civil Guard has celebrated its foundational day this year in Teguise, for the first time outside Gran Canaria, in an act of special symbolism that has served to underline the historical roots of the Corps in Lanzarote and its will to come even closer to Canarian society.
He has also highlighted the historical presence of the Guardia Civil on the island, which began in 1923, as well as the values that have guided the Institution since its origins: sacrifice, loyalty, discipline, austerity, selflessness, and a meritorious spirit.
Likewise, he has highlighted the daily commitment of the civil guards, their ability to adapt to the changing needs of society, and the recognition of those who, due to their career or exemplary service, have deserved institutional distinction. Immediately after, an exhibition of resources was developed aimed at bringing the Institution's work closer to Canarian society.
During the event, attendees had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the work carried out by the different participating specialties, as well as access operational vehicles and closely examine various equipment used in their interventions.
The event has also included an emotional remembrance for the colleagues fallen in the line of duty and a special thanks to the present school centers, who have been encouraged to get to know closely the meaning of public service and the importance of the values of coexistence, security and social commitment. The celebration has concluded with a message of continuity and firmness in the commitment of the Civil Guard with the citizenry, reaffirming its vocation to protect, assist and serve, adapting to the challenges of the present without losing its essence.
Foundation of the Civil Guard
The Civil Guard was created on March 28, 1844, by Royal Decree, as a special Corps of armed infantry and cavalry force with the designation of civil guards. The responsibility for organizing said corps was entrusted to Field Marshal Francisco Javier Girón y Ezpeleta, II Duke of Ahumada.
The Duke of Ahumada presented on April 20 a report on the organization of the Corps that led to the immediate repeal of the first Royal Decree, which never even came into effect, and the publication of a new one on May 13, 1844, thus creating the Civil Guard Corps, which has endured under the same name and values to the present day.
The Civil Guard today
The Civil Guard is present by land, sea, and air throughout the national territory. To carry out its duties, it has approximately 80,000 agents throughout Spain's geography. The main mission of the Civil Guard is, among others, to guarantee the protection of citizens against criminal acts, ensure compliance with the laws by bringing those who break them to justice, defend the free exercise of rights and freedoms, and preserve public safety.
