Spain will allow from May 18, 2026, payment with Bizum in physical stores and companies, reinforcing its role as a complete digital wallet and accelerating the digitalization of payments in Spain.

Thus, the businesses in Lanzarote that decide to join will offer a real alternative for digital payments to the American Visa and Mastercard.

With more than 30 million users and more than 1.2 billion operations, Bizum makes the definitive leap to commerce with Bizum Pay, which will allow payments in physical stores and online businesses, even through bank cards. Its rollout will begin with entities such as CaixaBank and will progressively extend during 2026, in a move that reinforces its position against Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The Bizum fees at physical points of sale will range between fixed fees of 0.10-0.40 euros and percentages of 0.10%-0.60% depending on the bank and business volume, compared to the current average of 0.37% paid by card (with peaks of 0.92% in hospitality and minimums of 0.22% in supermarkets).

In this new scenario, David Blanch, Digital Director of the hosting and domain registrar company cdmon, highlights the positive impact it will have on business management: "The digitalization of payments not only brings convenience, it also directly improves the accounting and financial control of companies and self-employed individuals, by facilitating traceability and the automatic registration of operations".

However, we must pay attention to the warnings from the Bank of Spain about the increase in scams in immediate payments, especially due to their speed and irreversibility. Among the risks are fake QR codesidentity theft, or requests under pressure.

Regarding digital hygiene, he emphasizes that "keeping devices updated, having secure and verified payment systems, and avoiding suspicious links drastically reduces the risk of fraud", and recalls that "personal or banking data should never be provided via SMS or email".

The expansion of Bizum marks a key advance in the digitalization of payments, but also highlights the need to strengthen cybersecurity. As the technology company points out, “the success of this new stage will depend on combining speed, control, and security, both for users and for companies.”
