With the aim of promoting and strengthening olive cultivation in the islands, the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA) of the Government of the Canary Islands is organizing the seventh edition of the Official Virgin Extra Olive Oil Competition Agrocanarias, which will be held in Fuerteventura on January 16 and 17.
The finalists will be eligible for three medals: Grand Gold Medal and 'Best Virgin Extra Olive Oil 2023', Gold Medal and Silver Medal. In addition, the special distinction of the jury will also be awarded to the 'Best Organic Virgin Extra Olive Oil of the Canary Islands 2023 and the Best Image and Presentation 2023', which will assess all the elements that are part of the labeling, including the design of the bottle.
The oil that obtains the qualification of 'Best Virgin Extra Olive Oil of the Canary Islands 2023' will be the protagonist of a report, which will be sent to specialized magazines, in addition to being published on the ICCA website.
The Minister of Agriculture of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, highlighted the relevance of this contest "to publicize the good quality of this product, which is gaining more and more ground, being essential to promote its commercialization".
In this sense, she clarified that "this event is added to the rest of the initiatives launched by the Canary Islands Government, with the aim of promoting and boosting the work of the producers of virgin extra olive oil in the islands, since despite being a recent crop, it has had a significant development in the last 15 years, with the presence of oil mills in almost all the islands".
Vanoostende explained that "in order to achieve the greatest promotion of the different productions of the Canary Islands, a maximum of two distinctions per oil mill will be granted".
