The "Lanzarote Wine Run" race was promoted this weekend in the Basque Country, on the occasion of the half marathon that is held every year and that unites the towns of Behobia and San Sebastián. This half marathon is one of the oldest races held in Spain and this time 19,000 people participated.
The presence of "Lanzarote Wine Run" in this Basque race consisted of the installation of a stand, which "attracted the attention not only of the runners, but of the hundreds of spectators who enjoyed the event", according to the Cabildo. The main attractions were a promotional video, highlighting the values of the Wine Race, and a multimedia point from where visitors could access the official website lanzarotewinerun.com to pre-register for this event, scheduled for June 16, 2013. Wine tastings of Designation of Origin and cheeses from the island were also offered.
The Cabildo has highlighted "the success" of this event. At the end of the Donostian half marathon, the pre-registration of 215 athletes, both national and foreign, was achieved in the "Wine Run". With this action, the Department of Economic Promotion of the Cabildo, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and the Regulatory Council of Designation of Origin, "has taken this proposal outside our borders", "which more than meets the demands and requirements of the new segment of tourists, who when choosing a vacation space looks for other attractions, in addition to sun and beach".
The councilor Francisco Fabelo has assured that this was a "unique opportunity" that Lanzarote "should not miss, since it is presented as one of the best showcases to publicize the particularities of the Lanzarote race", which is characterized by its "innovation and direct link with local enogastronomy and the landscape".
For Fabelo, choosing the Behobia-San Sebastián event is "reaching a public number, coming from the Basque Country, southern France and Catalonia". He also considers that it is a public "especially sensitive to the territory, good food and sports, keys to the Wine Run". Fabelo announced the intention that the Wine Race will also be present in the Paris and London marathons, which will be held soon.
For his part, the president of the Regulatory Council of Designation of Origin of Lanzarote, Javier Betancort, highlighted "the great interest that the event has aroused in this call, which has meant a great opportunity to also promote the wines and cultivation areas of the island".
