Lanzarote led the citizen contribution to the green container in the Canary Islands, with 45.4 kilos per inhabitant in 2024, according to data from Ecovidrio, a company specialized in the selective collection of glass containers.
Next is Fuerteventura, with 41 kilos per inhabitant; La Palma (23.1 kg), El Hierro (19.5 kg), Gran Canaria (19.3 kg), Tenerife (18.2 kg) and La Gomera (15.7 kg).
Last year, the selective collection of glass containers throughout the Canary Islands registered a historical record by reaching, for the first time, 49,312 tons.
Thus, the emission of 30,300 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere has been avoided, equivalent to removing more than 14,000 cars from circulation for a year.
Also, 37,400 MWh of energy have been saved, which is equivalent to more than two months of energy consumption of all the hospitals in the Canary Islands.
In this way, in a context where a generalized drop in consumption of around 3% is estimated and, therefore, in the generation of glass container waste, in the Canary Islands the selective separation of glass containers grew by 1.8%, figures that highlight the commitment of the Canarians to recycling.
Specifically, in 2024, each Canarian deposited 22.1 kilos of glass containers, the equivalent of 75 glass containers per person, in the 12,934 green containers that are installed in the region.
The figure is higher than the national average (19.1 kilos per inhabitant or 65 containers per person). Thus, based on these figures, the Canarians deposited 462,000 containers a day and more than 321 containers per minute in the green containers.
