The number of vehicle registrations in the Canary Islands grew in April by 14.26% in relation to the same period of 2022, according to Faconauto, the dealers' association, which observes a "slowdown in growth and is concerned that sales to individuals are down 2.2%".
In total, 3,453 vehicles were registered in the Canary Islands in April, 14.26% more than a year earlier, of which 1,498 correspond to individuals (-2.22%), 1,341 to companies (+58.32%) and 614 to rental vehicles (-4.51%).
In the whole year, all segments give positive figures in relation to the first four months of 2022: there were 16,011 total registrations (+31.12%), of which 6,863 were to individuals (+10.02%), 5,813 to companies (+79.03%) and 3,335 for rent (+22.34%).
Faconauto attributes the fall in sales to individuals in April to the rise in interest rates, since more than 80% of sales in this segment are financed.
Electric cars account for only 5% of the total
Motorcycle registrations in April were 956, up 31.3%, and commercial vehicles were 537, a growth of 24%. In buses and industrial vehicles registrations fell by 12.5% with 28 units.
As for electric vehicles, 177 passenger cars were registered in April, which is just over 5% of the total market. In the accumulated of the year, registrations of 100% electric passenger cars account for 4.5% of the total market.
Dealers believe that until the battery charging infrastructure is developed and the procedures for aid are streamlined, for whose payment it is necessary to wait around a year and a half, "it is going to be very difficult" for the electric vehicle market to take off.
