The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, assured this Thursday that the shielding of Fuerteventura to prospecting in search of rare earths requires the modification of the Mining Law in the Congress of Deputies.

Clavijo, visiting Fuerteventura today to inaugurate the Pepe Dámaso Arts Space, made these statements to questions from the press after the three previous requests from the company Satocan have been joined by two more from the company la Roche Bayanna, bringing the total number of mining prospecting requests on the island to five.

The Canarian president has clarified that, in the negotiation process, there is a commitment from the company that it will not exercise its right, “what we are doing is acquiring the licenses by the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands.”

The objective, he pointed out, is that “any other company, over which we may not have the capacity of influence that we have at this time, acquires a license and that it cannot be activated.”

The strategy, he pointed out, is for the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands to acquire the licenses, a solution marked by the lawyers and legal services of the Autonomous Community so that the authorization becomes “property of the Government of the Canary Islands.”

The president of the Canarian Executive explained that this is the solution until the Mining Law is modified, something “that the Spanish Government has to do, and until the Island Planning Plan of Fuerteventura is also in place.”

“It is the only way we have to shield so that what the people of Fuerteventura want is done: not to do any prospecting on the ground,” he added.
