Under the slogan "Renewing commitment", the UGT union held an Extraordinary Island Committee this Wednesday at the Hotel Lancelot to designate the new General Secretary in Lanzarote. César Reyes, the only candidate, took over from Orlando Suárez, who had held the position until now.

"Now a new stage is opening in terms of the lines of work," César Reyes told ACN during the voting. "But the commitment to the workers will remain the same." The new General Secretary emphasized, on the other hand, the continuity of the objectives that were set on January 26, 2006 at the X Island Congress of UGT, although he assures that he is especially concerned about "the tourism sector, which is not going through a good time, because the subcontracting of workers is very high and the contract systems are abusive, especially due to the temporality".

Except for the replacement of Orlando Suárez, the Island Executive Committee continues in full. The former general secretary presented his resignation to this Committee last May, obtaining the approval of the Regional shortly after. "After twelve consecutive years in office, it seemed appropriate to me that a renewal should take place," explained the former secretary.

"This can be a relaunch of the union, a new impulse, new energies and a more modern vision." César Reyes' candidacy was carried out "in a agreed way", as Orlando Suárez specified. "He is a well-accepted colleague and the new air can be positive, it is an important generational change".

In addition to the affiliates and the General Secretary of UGT-Canarias, Alicia Rodríguez, numerous faces of island politics could be seen at the event, including the president of the Cabildo, Manuela Armas, and the mayor of Arrecife, Enrique Pérez Parrilla.
