The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, warned this Tuesday of the rise in oil prices, a consequence of the war between Iran and Israel, which will generate a rise in inflation in the Canary Islands, where "everything comes with transport".
Fernando Clavijo, in the Parliament plenary and in response to a question from the Gomera Socialist Group on the measures that the Government is promoting so that economic improvement reaches the most vulnerable Canarian homes, stated that "there is no good news".
The president pointed out that this international context means that the Government of the Canary Islands "even more" has to get to work to raise wages, address the housing emergency and also promote social agreement between workers and unions.
In his opinion, inflation can only be corrected through fiscal measures.
Likewise, he has admitted that he is "very" concerned about the severe poverty in the Canary Islands, where there is 10.8% that becomes chronic and from which he said it is not possible to escape.
Although the economy is doing well, employment is doing very well and the islands are growing above the Spanish average, "the wealth that is being generated is not being adequately redistributed," he lamented. The three indicators that justify the poverty in the Canary Islands, he added, are the housing emergency, job insecurity and inflation.
The deputy of the Gomera Socialist Group, Casimiro Curbelo, recalled that in the Canary Islands 65% of workers are in a situation of vulnerability and 12% do not make it to the end of the month, therefore, he denounced, "salaries do not allow people to live reasonably" due, in large part, to the fact that the cost of housing "overwhelms reality."
