The Cabildo of Lanzarote has announced that it will "cooperate" in the development of the project ‘CEF 2 Digital - Backbone connectivity for Digital Global Gateways’, which aims to improve the island's connectivity through submarine fiber optic cables.

This project will be promoted by the public company Canarias Submarine Link SL (Canalink), through the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, showed her support for this initiative, stating that it will "help revolutionize connectivity in the Canary Islands and offer new alternatives and services for the inhabitants of the Islands."

“From the Cabildo of Lanzarote, we consider that the project, a system of submarine cables between Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura that allows avoiding the obsolescence of the current cables, which are more than 20 years old, is a strategic necessity for the islands and, as an institution, we believe that the execution of the project would be ideal to improve connectivity and introduce competition in currently regulated sections,” the president emphasized.

“As potential collaborators of the system to be developed, we will support the project and provide the support that is possible during its planning and execution,” Dolores Corujo concluded.

A public company with European funding

As explained by the Cabildo, Canalink is a public company fully controlled by the Technological and Telecommunications Institute of Tenerife, S.L., which in turn is 100% controlled by the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies, S.A. (Iter).

Created in 2004 as a national telecommunications operator, its objective is to transform, from its condition as a "neutral operator", the Canary Islands into an international traffic and interconnection platform and currently has a multiple system of submarine cables that allows offering high-speed connectivity with the maximum guarantee of quality, connecting the Canary Islands with Europe.

Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a key instrument of the European Union created to promote growth, employment and competitiveness through specific investments in infrastructure at the European level, including the digital sector among its lines of work, together with transport and energy.
