Arrecife received less than half the cruise passengers it did last year in September

The decline was even more pronounced in the Port of La Luz, while a slight increase was experienced in Puerto del Rosario

In September 2025, a total of 46,909 cruise passengers used the Canary Islands ports compared to the 97,404 recorded in the same month last year, according to the Maritime Transport Statistics published by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).

In the Port of Arrecife, the number of cruise passengers fell by 57.1% compared to September 2024, while in the Port of La Luz the drop rose to 77.7%.

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the decrease was 41%, while in Puerto del Rosario it rose slightly to 5,321 cruise passengers.

In general terms, the number of passengers who used the State ports in the Canary Islands in September of this year increased by 3% compared to the same month in 2024. In total, there were 683,593 travelers, compared to the 663,599 in 2024.

Regarding regular traffic, the ports of Los Cristianos and Santa Cruz de Tenerife were the ones with the highest passenger traffic. The former registered the passage of 1 out of every 3 passengers who used these infrastructures. For their part, the ports with the greatest increase in passengers were La Estaca, with a 14.3% increase, and Los Cristianos, with 15.4% more passengers.

The number of TEU containers (the most standardized measure worldwide) that passed through the Canary Islands' ports in September was 29.6 percent higher than in the same month of 2024. In total, 178,487 containers were counted compared to 137,701 in September 2024.

The Port of La Luz and Las Palmas is the one with the largest volume of container traffic. In the Canary Islands, 7 out of every 10 containers moved come from this facility. Compared to the previous year, container traffic in this port increased by 41 percent.

Regarding vehicle traffic, during the month of September it increased by 0.6% compared to the same month of the previous year. This year, 232,060 vehicles used the State Ports in the Canary Islands, compared to 230,778 in September 2024.

The data collected in this information refers exclusively to the eleven State Ports that exist in the Canary Islands. Arrecife, El Rosario, Arinaga, La Luz and Las Palmas, Salinetas, Granadilla, Los Cristianos, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Sebastián de la Gomera, Santa Cruz de la Palma, and La Estaca. There are other port facilities that depend on the Government of the Canary Islands, such as the Port of Las Nieves, Corralejo, Playa Blanca, or Morro Jable.
