The PSOE spokesperson in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Sebastián Franquis, has predicted this Wednesday that Fernando Clavijo will end this term "as one of the presidents who has been in office the longest and without building a single protected housing unit due to his management".
Franquis and the Member of Parliament Dolores Corujo have presented a campaign this Wednesday in Lanzarote on the Housing Law and the initiative that the socialists will defend in the Canary Islands Parliament for that law to be applied in the islands.
The PSOE spokesperson has pointed out that "5,900 homes in the Canary Islands are being built or are in progress, promoted by the previous Executive, while the current Government has not approved a moratorium on holiday homes and 32,000 homes have been added to the tourism market in the last two and a half years".
The initiative has three objectives: to have a registry of large property holders, to increase the Canary Islands Government's right of first refusal and pre-emption to acquire housing, and to undertake fiscal rebalancing so that those who buy housing to speculate with it pay more.
For her part, Corujo has opined that the data in the Canary Islands on housing are "chilling" and that this issue constitutes "a social emergency". "This deterioration has those responsible," she added, pointing to the presidents of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Fernando Clavijo and Oswaldo Betancort, both from CC.
The leader of the PSOE in Lanzarote has emphasized that the number of holiday homes on that island has increased by 80% under the CC and PP government and has criticized that there are still no "containment and control" measures, as not even the draft of the Insular Planning Plan contemplates the construction of public housing.
According to Corujo, CC and PP "refuse to apply the Housing Law to cap rental prices, among other measures".
Franquis assures that Clavijo will finish his term "without building a single home through his management"
