The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands has estimated that the volcanic eruption in La Palma could last "between 24 and 84 days."

This is a calculation made based on known data on the duration of historical eruptions on the island, although they recognize that it is a "not easy question to answer."

“Therefore, it would be acceptable to convey that we are moving in the range of a duration between 24 and 84 days, with a geometric average of the order of 55 days of duration," they indicated this Wednesday.

In addition, they have detailed that, according to the latest data from Copernicus EMS, lthe surface affected by the lava flows of the current eruption of Cumbre Vieja already reaches 154.37 hectares.

The institute also points out that the Canary Seismic Network has recorded, during Tuesday evening, a "sharp increase in the amplitude of the volcanic tremor" in Cumbre Vieja, which is an indicator of the "intensity of Strombolian explosive activity in the active vents at this time".
