The Parliament of the Canary Islands approved this Tuesday, May 26, unanimously by all groups represented in the Chamber, the modification of the lyrics of the regional anthem to include La Graciosa as the eighth island of the archipelago. The bill was passed in the plenary session held this Tuesday after having previously received the unanimous support of the Commission for Governance, Regional Development and Justice.
The modification adapts the official lyrics of the anthem to the recognition of La Graciosa as an island in the reform of the Canary Islands' Statute of Autonomy approved in 2018. In this way, the traditional reference to the “seven rocks” will be replaced by “eight rocks”.
Thus, from this coming May 30, Canary Islands Day, citizens will be able to sing the anthem with its new wording: “I am the shadow of an almond tree, I am volcano, saltpeter and lava. Spread across eight rocks beats the pulse of my soul”.
The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, positively assessed this unanimous approval and highlighted that “this agreement symbolizes the unity of the Canary Islands and the institutional and emotional recognition of La Graciosa within our collective identity”. She also stressed that “the unanimity reached reflects the commitment of all political forces to a historical and sentimental reality shared by all Canarians”.
Pérez added that the updating of the anthem “represents a gesture of justice and pride for La Graciosa and for the entire archipelago, especially on such a significant date as Canary Islands Day”.
