The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, shows her "enormous concern" about the new aggravation of the migratory crisis suffered by the island of El Hierro and especially thanks "the work of the volunteers and professionals who bear the full weight of a migratory crisis that worsens day by day, with arrival figures that are unacceptable for the Canary Islands and, even more so, for an island with barely 11,000 inhabitants."

"When the Board of the Parliament of the Canary Islands moved to El Hierro last April, we had the opportunity to learn about the work of entities such as Civil Protection Valle del Golfo, with Francisco Mendoza at the head, which plays a fundamental role in the care of immigrants. There are around 60 volunteers who face this crisis with a shortage of resources and a brutal effort that the Canary Islands cannot fail to recognize," says Astrid Pérez.

Astrid Pérez recalls that "these Civil Protection volunteers also work at the Temporary Care Center for Foreigners (CATE) in San Andrés, where they collaborate with the police in organizing immigrants, distribute food, care for newcomers and take care of issues such as organizing queues for food distribution or tents. On days like the ones we are experiencing today, they work 24 hours a day, without rest, since the agenda is always set by the canoes."

The president points out that the Red Cross in El Hierro is also at the forefront of care for immigrants in the port of La Restinga, where they received more than 15,000 people in 2023, "a figure that will be much higher in 2024."
