Lanzarote will be the stage, on March 3, of a qualifying match of the women's national team for the 2024 European Handball Championship. The match, organized by the Cabildo of Lanzarote in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Handball Federation, will pit the national team against the North Macedonia team in the municipal pavilion of Tías.

This Friday, the Plenary Hall hosted the presentation of this meeting, which was attended by the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort; the Minister of Sports, Juan Monzón; the general director of Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Francisco Pérez; the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz; and the president of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation, Francisco Blázquez.

Oswaldo Betancort said for his part that this meeting "represents the importance of Lanzarote in the national handball scene." "It is a tremendous honor to host this momentous meeting, and a great satisfaction also because at the head of the Spanish national team we have a Lanzarote native, Ambros Martín," added Betancort, who also invited "all municipalities that would like to fulfill a dream like this, to count on the Cabildo of Lanzarote because they will always find a helping hand."

The Minister of Sports, Juan Monzón, said for his part that this match is "great news for handball lovers on the island." "We are fortunate to be a territory with a very high quality of handball players, and it is demonstrated by the two women's teams we have in the Oro Honor Division and another in the Plata Honor Division, and to be able to enjoy a match of this level is a pride and I am sure that the stands of the Tías pavilion will be completely filled," he said.

The Cabildo of Lanzarote will announce, throughout the next week, the method by which citizens can acquire tickets for this meeting. However, the president of the Canary Islands Handball Federation, Blas Parrilla, has stated that they will be "very affordable prices that will be around 5 or 8 euros."

The path of the warriors towards the European Championship

The national team is currently in first place in the qualifying group for this year's European Championship, after adding victories in the first two matches against Lithuania (47-14) and Azerbaijan (18-38).

However, the North Macedonia team has also won the first two matches against the same teams, so they are tied with 4 points but with a smaller goal difference compared to the Spanish team.

On February 28, the national team will travel to North Macedonia to face the Macedonian team, so that, four days later, both teams will travel to Lanzarote and face each other again.
