A man has taken his own life in an occupied dwelling in Lanzarote, as La Voz has learned and the Civil Guard has confirmed. The events took place before 07:55 AM this Wednesday in the municipality of Tías, when emergency services were mobilized.

The first indications seem to indicate that it is a man who has self-harmed and ended up dying in an occupied dwelling, located on Camino El Callao. A patrol of the Civil Guard has moved to the town. 

Suicide is among the top fifteen causes of death in the world. In 2023, the latest updated data, a total of 241 people died by suicide in the archipelago, the highest figure since 2007. Of which, fifteen lost their lives in Lanzarote. On the island of volcanoes, the worst figure occurred in 2021, with twenty-five deaths. 

 

Risk factors associated with suicidal behavior

The guide from the Ministry of Health collects different risk factors that are associated with suicidal behavior. Among them, the individual ones, which range from certain mental disorders, to psychological factors (impulsivity, dichotomous thinking, cognitive rigidity, hopelessness, etc.), previous suicide attempts or ideation, age, gender, genetic and biological factors, and physical illness.

Family and contextual factors also influence, for example, socio-family support, socioeconomic and educational level, employment status, ethnicity and religion, in addition to exposure to the "contagion effect". 

Finally, other factors, such as having suffered a history of physical abuse or sexual abuse, sexual orientation, bullying by peers, as can be in adolescence, or easy access to weapons, medications or toxic substances.
