SPL Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen lost this Sunday (38-39) after missing the last penalty in the penalty shootout against the Basque Kukullaga Etxebarri in the grand final of the Spanish Cadet Championship in a match played at the Quijote Arena Municipal Pavilion in Ciudad Real, achieving the runner-up position in the Spanish Cadet Championship after a magnificent tournament.
The aurinegro team, led by Miguel Ángel Lemes, accompanied by Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Santana and Antonio Gabaldón, was very close to the Basques throughout the match. A continuous back-and-forth that made the equality reigning in the state final very clear.
An inopportune two-minute exclusion with five minutes remaining left the Tiñoseras with one less player at a crucial moment in the match. Despite everything, they got back into the game, tying at thirty goals. With one less player, the Basques managed to score, and Puerto del Carmen failed in attack after a bad pass (30-31, 28:17’).
In the next attack, the forces were equalized again with a new exclusion from Puerto. Kukullaga scored and went up by two goals with just over a minute left.
With one minute and one second left, a penalty in favor of the aurinegras and a goal by Martina Lemes. One down with one minute of play left. Kukullaga recovered all six players and called a timeout to face the last seconds of the match with a numerical advantage. The rehearsed play of the Basques (29:32’) went wide over the goal. Puerto had half a minute to tie the final and did so on the left flank with a beautiful goal, confirming what was heard from the stands, that “La Tiñosa never gives up.”
In overtime, Kukullaga Etxebarri started by striking first doubly. The post prevented Puerto from narrowing the gap in a counterattack (32-34). Martina Lemes scored (33-35) to leave the Tiñoseras two down at halftime of overtime. After the break, a good defense provoked a Tiñosero counterattack, and Amelia Gabaldón scored to narrow the gap (34-35).
Nerves in the Basques who lost the next attack, and Lemes launched a missile that burst the net and tied the game at 35. New game.
Puerto improved in defense and put the Basque players in trouble. Errors occurred on both sides of the forty by twenty in Ciudad Real. The last thirty-four seconds of overtime were entered tied at 35. Berroeta shot over the crossbar. With twenty-one seconds to play and the score tied, Amaia Barrachina shot, but it went wide. The referees didn't call anything. The final was decided from seven meters, from the penalty spot, after a fruitless and nerve-wracking overtime.
Daniela Balde defended the Tiñosera goal. Paula Díaz scored low (1-0). Martina Lemes offered a beautiful lob to tie at one. Berroeta scored the second (2-1). Daniela Lemes hit the post after a bouncing shot (2-1). Jarine Marina did not fail and made it three to one. Nadia Profumo failed to stop Amelia Gabaldón's shot (3-2). Negrillo ran into Daniela Balde's legs on the ground (3-2), and Sofía Ouledelmadani returned the tie (3-3). June Pinilla made it 4-3. Amaia Barrachina failed. Nadia Profumo, later the best goalkeeper of the tournament, stopped the shot at medium height, and Kukullaga was proclaimed champion of Spain Cadet.
Martine Lemes became the top scorer of the match and of the Tiñoseras with fifteen goals, with up to nine Conejera players scoring in the final. In Kukullaga, two players stood out in scoring, Iraia Berroeta with twelve goals and Janire Marina with fourteen goals, highlighting that only six players from the Basque team scored goals in the grand final.
Absolutely nothing to reproach the Lanzarote players. Magnificent championship for the Tiñoseras, players, and coaching staff, who have once again left the good name of La Tiñosa, Puerto del Carmen, Tías, Lanzarote, and the Canary Islands almost reaching the sky of Spanish women's handball, and it is true, La Tiñosa never gives up.
The runner-up champions of Spain from Puerto del Carmen are scheduled to arrive at César Manrique Lanzarote Airport at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9.
