The Lanzarote triathlete Lionel Morales participated this weekend in the Spanish Paratriathlon Championship, a test held in the Murcian town of Águilas. When there was one kilometer to go to the finish line, he fainted due to a heat stroke, and had to be transferred to a medical center, where he was induced into a coma.
The Lanzarote triathlete is in the ICU of the Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca, although his life is not in danger. Doctors determined to induce the coma after not reacting to resuscitation maneuvers and, in addition, he presented severe dehydration due to the heat.
Everything happened when there was one kilometer to go to the finish line. Lionel Morales fainted due to the strong heat in the area of Las Delicias beach. The Lanzarote triathlete was first attended by the medical services that covered the test, who verified that he did not react to cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers and transferred him in a Red Cross ambulance to the Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca.
The doctors who treated Lionel Morales decided to induce him into a coma to try to prevent vital signs from suffering any type of sequelae. Doctors assure that Morales is completely out of danger and the fact of inducing him into a coma is to avoid greater evils, although he has all the vital organs of the body in perfect condition.
