The cross-country modality of the XXVIII Island Games of Sports Promotion put the finishing touch to the season last Friday, with the presentation of trophies to the top three classified in the children's, cadet and youth categories. An act that is the prelude to the Canary Islands Cross Country Championship that will be held this coming weekend in Fuerteventura, and where the island of Lanzarote will be represented with the presence of 16 athletes.
Nearly 250 young people have participated this season in the cross-country modality of the Island Games of Sports Promotion, making clear the good health of the sport of athletics on the island of Lanzarote. The Island Sports Service of the Cabildo de Lanzarote programmed four scoring events for the island cross-country circuit, which took place in the municipalities of Yaiza, Tías and Arrecife.
Up to seven clubs and associations were represented in the cross-country modality of the Island Games of Sports Promotion. Club Deportivo Jabalina, Club Deportivo Atletismo José Carlos Hernández, Club Atlético Tías, Club Deportivo Trimakina, Club Azarug Tinajo, Club Atletismo Globara and ADAL Lanzarote, are the clubs that have had athletes in the initiation categories of cross-country. All its members received a medal accrediting their participation.
Last Friday the awards ceremony of the season was held, in an event that took place in the wrestling arena of the Lanzarote Sports City. The threat of rain forced the transfer of the awards ceremony to the wrestling arena, being planned to take place on the athletics track. The event was attended by Patricia Pérez, Minister of Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, accompanied by Juan Caraballo, representing the Island Athletics Delegation of Lanzarote, and Aroa Merino.
In the children's category, Laura Rodríguez Oubiña (ADAL Lanzarote) and Saúl Rodríguez Pérez (ADAL Lanzarote) were the winners of the cross-country modality. Ylenia Ruiz de León (Globara) and SelinaTse Delgado So (Globara), shared the second place on the podium in the women's category and in the men's category the second place went to César Rodríguez Santamaría (ADAL Lanzarote) and third Nauzet García Gil (ADAL Lanzarote).
Andrea Hernández Villa (ADAL Lanzarote) and Emilio Benito Benc (ADAL Lanzarote), were the champions of the cadet category of cross-country. The podium in the men's category was completed with the second place of Iñigo Santamaría Fernández (CD Nonadamos) and the third place of Boris Martín Sáez (ADAL Lanzarote). And in the women's category, Indara Aragón Duarte (ADAL Lanzarote) and Daniela Milazzo (ADAL Lanzarote) climbed to the podium, second and third classified, respectively.
And in the youth category, Lucía Rodríguez Soriano (ADAL Lanzarote) and Pablo Rodríguez Abreut (ADAL Lanzarote), were the winners of the cross-country modality. Diana Yanes Pérez (ADAL Lanzarote) and Gara Arteaga González (ADAL Lanzarote), completed the podium in the women's category with the second and third place, respectively. And in the men's category, the second place went to Santiago García Santamaría (ADAL Lanzarote) and the third place was conquered by David Suárez Martín (ADAL Lanzarote).
The closing ceremony of the cross-country modality of the Island Games was used to present the Lanzarote Team that will compete this coming weekend in the XXXV Canary Islands Championship. The island of Lanzarote will have the participation of 16 athletes, qualifying for the regional event the top four classified in the cadet and youth categories.
The competition will take place in the town of Tuineje (Gran Tarajal) on Sunday, February 19, starting at 10:00 am. The distance to be completed by the athletes of the cadet category will be 4,500 meters for the men and 2,500 meters for the women. And in the youth category, the distance will be 5,500 meters for the boys and 3,500 meters for the girls. The Lanzarote Cross Country Team will be composed of the following athletes:
Cadet Female: Andrea Hernández Villa, Indara Aragón Duarte, Daniela Milazzo and Sheila Lemes Arias
Cadet Male: Emilio Benito Benc, Iñigo Santamaría Fernández, Boris Martín Sáez and Marcos Peraza de Armas
Youth Female: Lucía Rodríguez Soriano, Diana Yanez Pérez, Gara Arteaga González and Araceli Umpiérrez Ferreira
Youth Male: Pablo Rodríguez Abreut, Santiago García Santamaría, David Suárez Martín and Diego González Gómez
