The preparation of the Women's League 2 team, which will once again represent the island of Lanzarote in national women's basketball, continues. Magec Tías 'Against Gender Violence' has acquired the services of Colombian international player María Esperanza Delgado to reinforce the squad for the 20/21 season.
María Delgado, who can play as a shooting guard and forward, was born in Bucaramanga (Colombia) in March 1996 and has extensive experience, not only in her country but also in Australia and the United States. However, this will be her first experience in professional basketball and in Europe.
“I imagine a very tactical and fast-paced basketball”, commented the player at the time her signing was made official, acknowledging that “I don't know, nor had I heard about the island of Lanzarote or the team, but I am excited to know that I am going to live my first professional experience there and that it will always be a special place for me”.
María Esperanza Delgado considers herself “a versatile player” highlighting her three-point shooting as her best weapon. In her game philosophy “if one manages to play good defense, the attack and effectiveness come alone”, she explains.
The Bumanguesa player is excited about this possibility that basketball offers her and expresses that “I have immense desire to live this experience, I can assure the fans that I will always give my best in every game, that I have a winning mentality, and that they expect many converted 3-pointers”.
The player trained as an athlete at the Ivan Olivares Basketball School and the Franciscano del Virrey Solís School. Afterwards, she signed for the Club Deportivo Pabor of Colombia with whom she remained for 4 seasons before making the leap to Australia, playing one season for the Melbourne Tigers. After her time in our antipodes, she went to the United States to play at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Lousiana Tech University and Angelo State University and is an absolute international with the Colombian national team.
For her coach, Aday Villalba, “she is a player who will allow us to open the court with her shot, she is capable of playing one-on-one situations, she is intelligent, young with talent, projection, very intense and competitive and will help us to grow also in that facet of intensity and rhythm.”
