A unique and peculiar race was held this Sunday morning in Arrecife. A vertical race consisting of a 6-kilometer course that ended on the 16th floor of the Arrecife Gran Hotel. This is the second edition of the Arrecife Gran Hotel vertical race, where athletes tested their physical condition to climb one by one the more than 300 steps of the hotel's 17 floors. Francisco José García Viñoly and Zaida Viera were the winners of the II Arrecife Gran Hotel Race.
The participants gathered in the Parque Islas Canarias area, with the youngest athletes being the first to start. The young athletes ran along El Reducto Avenue, completing the distances that had been prepared for them. Once at the finish line, all participants received a commemorative medal of the race.
The race for adults consisted of a 6-kilometer course, reaching La Concha beach, and to culminate the unique race having to walk up the stairs of 17 floors of the Arrecife Gran Hotel. The finish line was located on the 16th floor of the hotel establishment.
In the men's category, the Lanzarote athlete Francisco José García Viñoly, from the Ceat Tenerife-CajaCanarias club, repeated his triumph in the Arrecife Gran Hotel Race. Viñoly invested a time of 22 minutes and 29 seconds, averaging 3:44 minutes per kilometer. José Torres (24:06) crossed the finish line in second place and the podium was completed with the third place of Tanausú Cabrera (24:28). Among the men, the participation of the young Julen Marrero, a 16-year-old athlete who finished the race in tenth place overall, stood out.
In the women's category, the winner was Zaida Viera, completing the course of the race in a time of 32 minutes and 25 seconds. Second place went to Jennifer Staymann (33:24) and Yasmina Rodríguez (35:53) was the third classified of the II Arrecife Gran Hotel Race.
At the conclusion of the race, the trophies were awarded in the different categories arranged by the organization. An awards ceremony that took place in the Parque Islas Canarias area and concluded the morning with an exhibition by the firefighters of the Security and Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote.
