Misleading score in this fourteenth round recovered after its postponement last month against Costa del Sol Málaga, a team that had to attend to its duties in European competition. These continental responsibilities, with international players among its ranks included, predicted a tough match for a CB Zonzamas CICAR Lanzarote with much more humble objectives such as maintaining the category.
As the batatero coach, Patro Barambio, commented in the preview, the Malaga team were clear favorites, but each match is a world and they were going to try for the team, the board and for the fans, seeking to surprise against superior rivals to continue competing in the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola. And so it was. The Lanzarote team came into the match strong to prevent the visitors from getting away on the scoreboard. With that forcefulness, CB Zonzamas wanted to extend their chances of scratching something important and they succeeded by recovering several possessions with solid defenses from the 6-meter line.
During the first minutes, both teams disputed the electronic with minimal advantages. The batateras also took advantage of the Malaga losses, maintaining their pace of play. The local attacks were dense, CB Zonzamas found it much harder to find the goal than Costa del Sol Málaga. Despite this, they avoided rushing and worked each attack with which they managed to maintain their options by being only two goals behind. At least until the 10th minute, when the referees signaled a disputed exclusion to Brenda Roger to do so shortly after with María de León, moments of clear numerical superiority that the Andalusians took advantage of to, this time yes, put land in between.
The advantages of up to six goals for the visitors recalled what happened in the last match against Aula Valladolid. The electronic seemed to leave an insurmountable difference because, although there was still a lot of match left, the lack of troops due to injuries left CB Zonzamas with few options to refresh their game.
The opposite happened on the opposite bench, which also began to enjoy themselves with rapid outside shots and finding gaps in the pivot line. But the Lanzarote team pulled pride and managed to chain several recoveries and counterattacks with which they reduced the differences again, having options to go to halftime with a tie, although finally they had to settle for 12-14.
The second half promised options to give that surprise against a powerful Costa del Sol Málaga. CB Zonzamas tried, with a Brenda Roger finding gaps with individual plays and an Ariadna Molina commanding each attack that, with an outside shot, managed to put the tables on the scoreboard two minutes into this new time (15-15). In addition, Susi Sánchez and Mazaira had defended well under the sticks during the first half, later also appearing with plethoric interventions Ana Martín.
The Malaga team were no longer so comfortable, not even in attack where they were already forced to spend more time trying to move the rojinegra defense. But the greater effectiveness in attack put Málaga back with partials of two goals in favor. Despite this, Patro Barambio's team seemed to be quite alive. The stands accompanied and gave the feeling that important things could be achieved since the differences in the electronic were minimal again, at least until the 47th minute. After a nice arm feint, Brenda Roger managed to overcome an entire Spanish international goalkeeper like Merche Castellano and put the tie at 24 on the scoreboard.
The comeback seemed possible, but the opposite was going to happen. The goal of the lateral majorera would be the last of the match for a CB Zonzamas that began to accuse the physical wear. Costa del Sol Málaga took the opportunity to get away on the scoreboard with unforced errors from the locals who saw again how the great work done during the match escaped them. More than 10 minutes without scoring that condemned the Lanzarote team, while the visitors made up the score in their favor until the virtual 24-33 final.
It is not the only appointment of the season in which the Lanzarote team demonstrate that they can compete with consolidated rivals in the league, standing up to teams from the top of the table. CB Zonzamas has nothing left to prove, the batateras have enough quality and level. The only pending subject is to materialize it on the scoreboard in the final minutes. With that objective they will travel next day against a also hard BM Porriño.
