The digital divide in the municipality of Tías and why we must act on it

Globalization has brought with it numerous advantages that have led to a change and exponential development of society. However, not all the consequences of this event are positive, since the unbridled advance has led to certain imbalances in the establishment of new trends in this modern society.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are one of the factors that have come to improve our way of life. However, as a result of them, the digital divide has been born. This fact is the imbalance between people to access these technological tools that connect us with others. Two years ago, unexpectedly, a virus called COVID-19 locked us in our homes and we had to study, work and look each other in the eye through screens. For many, access to the Internet allowed us to continue with our lives, despite the pandemic, thanks to modalities such as teleworking or online education. But this new reality brought to light that the development and course of daily life is not the same for everyone.

We must be aware that a new figure of marginalization has emerged, technological discrimination. This constitutes a form of poverty and social exclusion, by depriving a part of the citizenry of essential resources to develop and generate wealth. The pilot experiment was developed during the health crisis, when numerous students, workers and companies were found to have difficulties in teleworking, following online classes or getting performance from their business.

Faced with this situation of inequality we must prepare and act, the question is how. Well, one of the most powerful tools is knowledge, being aware of the situation. That is why our municipality has decided to develop a study to analyze this social fracture. Through this analysis of the current situation of our municipality we will be able to detect the consequences of the digital divide. The results will clarify what are the needs in terms of quality, infrastructure, knowledge, accessibility and use of ICT of our population and locality.

After being aware of the challenges facing our municipality, lines of action will be created to reduce, or eliminate, the obstacles that prevent our citizens from developing correctly. Promoting digital skills, democratizing access to technological resources and promoting knowledge to make correct use of these, will be some of the measures in which we will work to achieve this.

Our priority for the people of Tías is the well-being and progress of all, but not at any price. We are committed to community progress in equal opportunities, and for this it is necessary to combat all the elements that favor social exclusion, such as the digital divide.
