In recent days, there have been attempts to confuse the population of the municipality of Tías with unfounded accusations claiming that this City Council is against renewable energy. Nothing could be further from the truth: Tías has been a pioneer in betting on a sustainable model and will continue to be so.
Our municipality's commitment to the fight against climate change is supported by concrete facts, such as the signing of the Covenant of Mayors, which commits us to reducing CO2 emissions by 40% before the year 2030. We were the first City Council in Lanzarote to take on this challenge, and we continue to work actively in that direction.
Our commitment to photovoltaic energy is clear and evident. The roofs of our municipal buildings already house solar panel installations that generate clean energy and help reduce our carbon footprint.
This is the path we defend: taking advantage of already built spaces, without the need to sacrifice our valuable agricultural or landscape land.
However, we cannot support projects that prioritize private interests at the expense of the quality of life of our neighbors, our landscape, and our fertile land. The Vega de Mácher is a natural and agricultural treasure that we must protect. We cannot allow fertile land to be consumed in the name of renewables that, in reality, only benefit private companies, leaving our municipality and our people empty-handed.
If at some point land needs to be expropriated, let it be for projects that truly benefit the people: schools, health centers, public housing, and other necessary infrastructure to improve the life of our community. That is our priority and our commitment.
We defend a sustainable development that combines the energy transition with the protection of our natural and social heritage. We want renewable energy, but not at any price or in any way. We firmly believe that there are ways to move towards a greener future without mortgaging our territory or the rights of our neighbors.
We call on citizens not to be deceived by those who try to distort our position. Tías continues and will continue to bet on a sustainable, responsible, and fair model, where renewable energies are part of the solution, and not a new problem.
