Can you imagine an earthquake?...urban planning in Puerto del Carmen? What would be the consequences that could occur, in a tourist area that would have to be recomposed, rebuilt or simply cleaned up?
In times when unfortunately we talk so frequently about natural disasters, which devastate entire populations and then see themselves in the need to rebuild, it is a good exercise, mentally, to think about how this reconstruction should be carried out, and on this thought, the following game is developed, or not?
After so much time, 40 years since the first tourist accommodation, the Fariones hotel, one could think that a catastrophe, where not a single block would be left standing, would serve us to build a new Puerto del Carmen.
Would it be discussed whether to rebuild it as we know it today? A lot of small urbanizations with one or two-story apartments, each with its own pool, narrow streets and many of them going nowhere, without open spaces, squares, promenades, etc.
Would it make sense to think that a new tourist area could be built with the same knowledge of the island that we have today? The same type of construction, for a different tourism.
Would it be possible, at this time and after so much accumulated experience, for better and for worse, to understand that another way of building, for tourism and the island, is possible. Is a six-story hotel feasible on the avenue of the beaches? Instead of 30 complexes of 40 apartments, two hotels of 600 rooms each? Could we talk about 3 or 4 avenues? Why only one avenue and on the shore of the beach? Could we think of large green areas, instead of small gardens? Would we see wide roads instead of alleys? Large spas instead of simple showers? Underground parking or the car on the sidewalk? Small shops or commercial areas? Public or private transport? Bike lanes or save yourself if you can? Sports areas or schoolyards? Bus station or edge of the road? Nautical station or go down the cliff to the tide? Leisure parks or rooftops of shopping centers?
In times of crisis, one can only think about taking the opportunity to improve, update and with a vision of the future, get out of it. If until now, what we have had has served us and now we are in decline, something will have to be done. A lot of money has been earned, it is time to spend.
Urbanizations that have been built for more than 25 years and that have already been highly amortized, it is time to think about what to do with them. From a political and business perspective, it would be advisable to consider whether the time has come for a clean slate. Could it be possible that 5 small complexes could be a large hotel?
More efficient in terms of services for the tourist and greater profitability for the owner or owners and greater benefit for the community: concentrate the habitability in height and leave free spaces for the public?
Order the new works, according to the needs, in terms of rhythm and quality. The public administrations should lead the new challenges, be able to unite wills, that could be beneficial for the majority, unify small companies and give as a result, a larger one, with better capacities to face the new tourist models, respond to the new trends.
The reconstruction would give us the opportunity to face the future from a new starting point, directing, with the experience acquired, a challenge of improvement and common welfare. It is the occasion, times of crisis, time of opportunities, of politicians with vision and brave entrepreneurs. A good reform will never be the same as a new work.
