"Breaking barriers"

April 1 2019 (18:30 WEST)

Putting yourself in someone else's shoes helps you understand reality. A fundamental issue when you want to represent your neighbors well. They call it empathy. I'll give you an example:

In the same scenario, such as in the heart of Costa Teguise, we find Paula, a 26-year-old girl who works in a coffee shop in the seaside village. She has no mobility problems, in fact, she is very likely to barely notice the obstacles when she is taking a walk, as she can go up and down stairs perfectly, as well as dodge bollards or overcome curbs because she will always have an alternative to go through another exit.

On the other hand, we have those people with reduced mobility who face an absolute odyssey in the same scenario, as is the case of Irene. This resident of Costa Teguise is 34 years old. She is currently trying to find a job where they don't put obstacles in her way because she has to move in a wheelchair. If you add to that that she has to deal daily with architectural barriers, steps, sidewalks in poor condition, ATMs that are not adapted, and in summer she can enjoy little or no decent access to the beach. In this way, the same urban scenario can represent two very different things for those who pass through it. I propose 3 questions:

-Do you notice the difference between Paula and Irene now?

-Do you know if the municipality in which you live could be considered accessible?

-Have you wondered what requirements it has to meet to be classified as such?

The only possible solution is this:

ADAPT THE SPACES OF THE MUNICIPALITY.

The transformation towards an accessible Teguise for all begins by developing a good Accessibility Plan where the shelters at public transport stops also have a use in Braille and with an audible signal. The next generations of Teguise need to receive a great legacy: Full accessibility.

In short, give all the facilities in the world to improve the level of employment by offering more municipal places for personnel with "different abilities".

For sports lovers like me, we will also fight to have a Municipal League and sports tournaments throughout the year in sports such as basketball or adapted football. It is time to start making the dreams of people like Irene, or children like Nico Nuñez, who dreams of being able to have more leisure activities in the afternoons, come true.

Our commitment is firm. We will be builders of dreams and we will start by laying the first brick on May 26 in the municipal elections.  The time has come for a Teguise for everyone. Let's make it possible!
