They announce that at Jameos del Agua at the end of October a Congress on Sustainability in the marine environment, on intelligent and sustainable Blue Economy will be held.
In March of next year, Jameos del Agua will once again be the setting for another International Congress on Sustainable and Intelligent Tourism organized by the Government of the Canary Islands for the islands of Macaronesia.
Does anyone know what Intelligent and Sustainable Tourism in Islands is?
I remembered these days how years ago when telephone booths still existed, the population of Lanzarote opposed and expressed their displeasure at placing a telephone booth next to the entrance of Jameos del Agua, in front of the ticket office, because that blue metal contraption clashed too much with the environment. There was an International Congress in the early nineties and that telephone format was essential for the attendees.
Such a stir was created that the Cabildo built a stone wall to disguise and blend in the booths. And the people of Lanzarote were satisfied. We knew what was beautiful for the island,
and now?
On another occasion someone proposed building a pink Shopping Center on the Islote del Francés in Arrecife and I remember the general astonishment.
And I saw how all together we were surprised and commented in hushed tones. That doesn't happen anymore.
Lanzarote has preserved its landscape much better than other islands by not putting up advertisements or billboards in the middle of its landscape. At this moment Red Eléctrica has already placed the bases of its fifty-meter towers from Macher to Playa Blanca. It is waiting to finish the burial works in Femes to place the complete structures of those very showy contraptions for this island and for the Papagayo area.
Nobody says anything, nobody protests even in hushed tones.
Are we conejeros? Or are we no longer conejeros?
