Two fishermen managed to catch a 276-kilo bluefin tuna on Monday, in the bocaina between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The bluefin tuna season began this week in the Canary Islands and a boat from El Golfo was able to bring a large specimen to port.

Francis, one of the members of Inver Pescatrón, a fresh fish distribution and sales company, explained that on Monday two fishermen went out in a 10-meter boat to fish. "With live bait, because the fishing we do is artisanal," he said.

They took the boat to the sea that separates Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with the intention of catching a specimen. It was then that they captured the enormous bluefin tuna. Francis explains that it is not usual for tuna of this size to be sold on the island, since "normally, they are usually exported to places like Japan".

However, on this occasion the company has managed to sell the specimen to a hotel in Arrecife for "a couple of thousand euros". The bluefin tuna was delivered this Tuesday.

The bluefin tuna season in the Canary Islands will last approximately one month. Afterwards, the tuna will head towards the Strait and spawn in the Mediterranean, because "they always follow the same route".
