The City Council of Tías reiterates its "frontal rejection" of the project promoted by Yaizatún to install marine cages for the cultivation of gilthead seabream, sea bass and tuna on the coast of the municipalities of Tías, San Bartolomé and Arrecife. The council recalls that the deadline to submit allegations to the Government of the Canary Islands ends on December 20, so it requests "institutional and business support".
“We request support from the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the Government of the Canary Islands itself and the associative group of the island, especially tourist and business associations, so that we all show this frontal rejection. We continue to insist and these days we will present allegations to the environmental document of the project that is in public information until December 20,” declares the mayor, José Juan Cruz Saavedra.
"The legal team of the Tías City Council is finalizing the allegations" to present them to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands in relation to the “environmental document of the gilthead seabream, sea bass and Atlantic tuna cultivation project in the AGM-ZIA-LZ-2 (URDS-2, URES-n 1 and URES-2) promoted by Yaizatún SA to be located between La Bufona and Barranquillo beach, coastline of the municipal districts of Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías”.
“We do not want the marine cages due to the terrible environmental impacts they will have on our coastline and its surroundings and due to the negative repercussions they will have for the island's tourism sector, which affects many people. We need a forceful response from public administrations and business associations, among others,” added the mayor.
It should be remembered that currently "three contentious-administrative appeals are in process" filed against the resolutions of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, which has processed the aquaculture project.
The Yaizatún project includes the installation of 56 marine cages in important seagrass areas. The scope of the concession coincides with the delimitation of the 'Place of Community Importance' of the marine space of the east and south of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, of the 'Red Natura 2.000'.
