The Zonzamas environmental complex is only capable of separating 7 percent of the waste that reaches it. Therefore, its recycling level barely exceeds this percentage, since we must add the waste that arrives separated at source.
In order to improve this situation, the Cabildo, through the Classified Activities and Waste area, has launched the "Lanzarote recycles" campaign, the purpose of which is, according to the councilor of the branch, Sergio Machín, to promote the three "R"s, that is, reduce, reuse and recycle. The activity will be promoted among citizens and the educational, tourism and business sectors through two videos on glass and cardboard as well as a spot and other activities.
SITUATION
Today, the Cabildo is working to improve the state of Zonzamas, according to its managers. Thus, after the extension of the contract with the UTE in charge of it, this Thursday it was announced that the act of staking has already been signed to start the works on the biomethanization plant. At the same time, it is worth highlighting other works by the Government of the Canary Islands to improve the toilets for staff or the creation of an animal crematorium.
Regarding the situation of tires in the area, which have caused some fires, Sergio Machín explained that these elements no longer enter. "The problem is that they have to be taken out of there, which is not required by law, but we are working on it," explained the Councilor for Classified Activities and Waste.
Finally, regarding the creation of a Special Territorial Waste Plan, the head of the area pointed out that it is an issue that will have to be left for after the elections "although it is essential to control spills and dumps to create points in the north, center and south areas", concluded Sergio Machín.
