The workers of the Naviera Armas ferry "Volcán de Tindaya", which travels the Playa Blanca-Corralejo route, have called an indefinite strike for August 15, due to the company's failure to comply with the employees' rest hours.
According to Juan Valiente, president of the Works Council, the workers are working "16 and 17 hours" a day, when they should "be eight". "The workers' rest periods are not being respected and safety is being put at risk, when many people, including children, are traveling there, and the workers have to be in perfect condition."
For this reason, CCOO has decided to call a strike, so that the company takes the appropriate measures and reduces the working hours of the employees since, according to Juan Valiente, this situation has been repeating itself "for eight months". "We ask that our rights be respected", he points out. Valiente says that these hours are being paid, but only "at the price of 5 euros" each.
In addition, Valiente says that the company owes "more than 190,000 euros" to the workers because, he explains, "the proportional part of the extra pay for their days off is not being paid to the employees". "We sail for 2 months and have 36 days off and those days we are not paid the part of the extra pay".
