The Viticultural Technical Table of Lanzarote, formed by technicians from the Island Agricultural Service of the Island Council, the Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin of Lanzarote Wines and winemakers from the island, recently held a meeting to address the situation of the vineyard ahead of the upcoming harvest campaign.
Chaired by the Island Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Ángel Vázquez, the Viticultural Table was optimistic, given the forecasts that this year's harvest will be better than last year with respect to the quality of the grape, since currently, the vineyard has a good flowering.
Among the topics addressed by the technicians, the participation of Lanzarote in various research projects to improve the productivity of the vineyards stands out, such as the project called 'The genetic architecture of the vines cultivated in the Atlantic islands and their adaptation to different climatic conditions', as well as the continuity in the project of 'Clonal selection of the vine' of the University of Tarragona, for which the Cabildo will condition a plot in the Experimental Agricultural Farm for the planting of clones of interest, so that it serves as a mother plot.
Likewise, during the meeting, emphasis was also placed on the Training Plan for winegrowers, paying special attention to the control of pests and other diseases, as well as recommendations on the management of irrigation water in the vine.
The Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Ángel Vázquez, stressed "the importance of joining efforts so that one of the crops par excellence of Lanzarote, such as the vineyard, which also contributes with its landscape to be a great tourist attraction, continues to bear fruit and continues to cross our borders thanks to the excellent quality of our wines."
