The socialist group of the Arrecife City Council has described the municipal management of the PP, PIL and PNL, after 100 days of the new government group, as a "propagandistic and electoral parade", according to the head of the PSC group, Enrique Pérez Parrilla, at a press conference.
According to the socialist, "the sale of smoke becomes palpable when recalling some of the major urgent action projects proposed by Mayor Cándido Reguera". Pérez Parrilla recalled that "despite so much announcement in the press, they have not been able to demolish La Rocar when the procedure was already finalized; the installation of the Fermina islet is still not working; the Auditorium project has been paralyzed by the Autonomous Government; the Canary Islands Park continues without light and nothing is known about the IBI subsidy," he said.
Regarding the "Calatrava icon", the socialist stated that moving the debate to the architect's identity "aims to mask the absence of an in-depth legal study on the City Council's rights over part of the islet's plot and the real price of an estate for which two and a half million pesetas were paid in its day and now 250 million are claimed".
He also highlighted the fact that "all the initiatives they have presented as successes of their management are the result of the previous work of the socialists, such as the Neighborhood Plan, the projects of Plan E, the investments in improvements in schools and even the return of the sculpture of César Manrique to the roundabout in front of the Gran Hotel".
In his opinion, the only particular hallmark of this government group has been the "inadmissible salary increase, the duplication of the number of advisors and the economic abandonment of associations and social groups, in a critical moment of need".
The offer of an economic item for the new headquarters of the UNED, "when the location of the campus is not even defined"; the paralysis of the "Ten Doors" project to revitalize socio-cultural centers or the delivery of the keys to associations that "are not even registered as such" have been other issues subject to criticism from the PSC councilors.
Challenged budget
The press conference, held at the PSC headquarters in Arrecife, has also served to announce the challenge of the municipal budget for 2010, since according to the former socialist mayor, these are accounts "that could seriously compromise the future of the city".
"The figures have been inflated to respond to a series of promises that are difficult for the corporation to assume, which maintains a hollow and content-free image and media presence policy," he added.
The socialists have reported that they will assess the possibility of going to court if the government group does not heed the suggestions presented by the PSC to modify the budget in those aspects that they consider irregular.
