The spokesperson for the PSOE in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, has rejected this Tuesday that they "continue promoting new tourist beds on the island", after the authorization this Monday by the Government of the Canary Islands for a new hotel with 407 places in Costa Teguise, for which she has asked the island corporation to "stop it."
According to González in a press release from the PSOE, the resolution of the Government of the Canary Islands is of a "prior nature and it is up to the Cabildo of Lanzarote to grant the definitive authorization" so, in the opinion of the socialist councilor, “now is when you have the opportunity to put a stop to this authentic nonsense.”
“The data shows that Lanzarote has completely exceeded its load capacity and Oswaldo Betancort should not become an accomplice in the continued deterioration of the quality of life of our people and the destination itself,” González stated.
The socialist spokesperson recalled that the Island Government Council approved initiating the procedures to declare the island as a touristically saturated zone, last March, after taking note of the load capacity study carried out by Gaia Consultores Insulares, SLU, the reference office in the Canary Islands in this type of report.
“We have reports that make it very clear that authorizations should not continue to be granted for new beds, but we have something much more important, the conviction of the island's society that Lanzarote should not continue to increase its tourist offer,” the councilor pointed out.
"Continue with the declaration of a touristically saturated zone and dedicate all efforts to improving the quality of the destination"
“What needs to be done now is to continue with the declaration of a touristically saturated zone and dedicate all efforts to improving the quality of the destination, something totally incompatible with authorizing new beds,” González concluded.
