The Socialist Parliamentary Group presents for this next Plenary Session of the Regional Chamber a Non-Law Proposal (PNL) to implement prevention measures "that stop the continuous loss of soil in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura due to erosion due to the absence of vegetation cover, and that also represent an opportunity for employment projects for unemployed people."

In the initiative, defended by the deputy for Lanzarote Dolores Corujo, the Government of the Canary Islands is urged to "coordinate with the councils of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura a Soil Recovery and Erosion Control Plan." The PSOE points out that its objective is to "apply different prevention measures that also represent an opportunity for employment projects for people with low qualifications and in a situation of prolonged unemployment, such as the planting of forage species that generate feeding and shelter opportunities for numerous protected species, and the recovery of gullies caused by the circulation of vehicles."

The proposal recalls that Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, due to their semi-desert character, are almost exempt from the risks of forest fires, but have a less perceptible and constant "tragedy", "such as the continuous loss of soil, due to erosion caused by the total absence of vegetation cover."

For the socialists, this is a phenomenon "absolutely irreversible" but not inevitable, which could be avoided with measures such as the planting of forage species, which also generate feeding and shelter opportunities for numerous protected species, both birds and insects or reptiles.

The initiative also considers "essential the recovery of the gullies caused on the slopes by the circulation of different types of vehicles, among which quad bikes stand out, as well as the modulation of water in the ravines through dammed areas and nateros."

In addition, they are committed to these measures of prevention against soil loss as an "opportunity to launch employment projects for people with low qualifications and in a situation of prolonged unemployment", while they are willing to "teach courses on different techniques of using dry stone or agriculture."
