The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its councilor, Alberto Aguiar, will defend in the next plenary session of the corporation a motion to urge the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands to guarantee the continuity of the Insular Hospital as a center specialized in geriatrics. This initiative seeks to "preserve the only geriatric hospital in the Canary Islands, which for 75 years has offered health and care recognized for its quality, humanity and specialization."
Alberto Aguiar has pointed out the historical and social importance of this institution: "The Insular Hospital is not only a symbol of health in Lanzarote, but a benchmark in geriatrics at a regional and national level. Its disappearance would be an irreparable loss for our island and for all of the Canary Islands, since we are talking about the only hospital with this specialization in our archipelago."
The motion emphasizes that, "although the Insular Hospital needs renovation and maintenance work, its current function must be maintained and not be integrated as a simple unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital." González warned that "this decision would compromise its specialization, teaching capacity and hospitalization and palliative care services, which have been recognized for their quality of care."
"We are talking about a hospital that has trained generations of professionals and that has accompanied the families of Lanzarote in the most delicate moments of the lives of their elders. We cannot allow its legacy to be lost due to the lack of planning and commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands," added Aguiar.
The Insular Hospital is part of the 53 geriatric teaching units in Spain and is the only center in the Canary Islands that trains residents in this discipline, a fact that reinforces its key role in specialized health training. In addition, its privileged location, surrounded by gardens and with views of the sea, has provided a decent quality of life for patients and families.
The socialist spokesperson recalled that this year the Insular Hospital celebrates its 75th anniversary, and that it should be a reason for celebration and not concern. "It is time to recognize the work of this hospital and its staff, not to put its existence at risk. From the PSOE we demand a clear commitment from the Government of the Canary Islands to its renovation and continuity," she concluded.
