The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has clarified that the absence of the president Oswaldo Betancort in the last Plenary "lacked any justification". Although Betancort claimed to have to travel to La Palma to attend an awards ceremony, the event did not take place on Thursday night, several hours before the celebration of the island Plenary.

According to the PSOE, the president's absence coincided with "a particularly uncomfortable Plenary for him". On the one hand, "the neighborhood associations of Valterra and Titerroy were attending, who had been announcing for weeks their intention to demand progress in the delivery of their homes, paralyzed during the two and a half years of CC and PP mandate; and on the other hand, there was the presence in the plenary hall of the deputy and former president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, who has been repeatedly and deliberately prevented from accessing the plenary sessions".

“Oswaldo Betancort not only turns his back on the Plenary, which is the most important body of debate and control on the island, but directly flees when he is going to be held accountable. It was not a casual absence, it was a scare,” said the socialist councilor Benjamín Perdomo.

From the Socialist Group, they demand immediate explanations and consider that "this new episode confirms a way of exercising the presidency based on opacity and the absence of accountability". “You cannot continue to govern as if the institution were a personal estate. Lanzarote does not deserve a president who hides when citizens appear and lies about his institutional agenda,” concluded Perdomo.
