The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has denounced the elimination of the Municipal Cooperation Island Plan in the 2025 budgets, "which leaves the town councils without an essential source of financing for basic investments." The socialist spokesperson, Ariagona González, has warned that "this decision violates the Island Councils Law, which obliges these institutions to guarantee cooperation funds for the municipalities."
"By eliminating this plan, Betancort not only leaves the town councils without resources, but also arrogates the power to arbitrarily decide where the money is invested, punishing those who are not to his liking," González denounced.
The Municipal Cooperation Island Plan had 6.3 million euros in 2024, destined to improve local infrastructure and services. Its elimination, warns the PSOE, "represents a blow to municipal autonomy and the capacity of the town councils to attend to priority needs."
In addition, González recalled that the execution of investments in 2024 "barely reached 27.10%, which shows the lack of management of the current island government." "The municipalities have their own technical and administrative services to develop projects. Betancort not only renounces this capacity, but also condemns Lanzarote to another year of paralysis," she criticized.
From the PSOE they demand that the Cooperation Plan "be maintained in the 2025 budgets, warning that its elimination is illegal and turns the Cabildo into a tool of political blackmail to benefit only certain town councils."
