The Popular Party in the Arrecife City Council has warned about the health risk caused by the toxicity of asbestos in the event of the possible collapse of the Uralite sheets that exist on the roofs of the La Rocar warehouses.
In the opinion of the popular representatives, "it has been verified that the toxicity of asbestos, a carcinogenic element whose effects remain in the environment for quite some time, not only affects the people who reside in the La Rocar warehouses, but also those who pass through the area and residents in nearby areas."
Although the Arrecife City Council announced its intention to demolish the warehouses located in La Rocar, the popular representatives point out that, according to what was reported in the ordinary plenary session on September 28, the issue has been delayed "due to the hasty nature of the announcement, given that the requirements that such action entails had not been considered." Thus, the PP emphasizes that "this fact means that, to this day, about 50 people continue to reside in the warehouses, with the consequent danger that this entails, due to the risks of collapse of the roofs and the dilapidated state of the warehouses in general."
For this reason, the Popular Party will ask in the next plenary session "if the City Council is aware of the importance and seriousness of the pollution problem and the public health that could be caused by the collapse of Uralite sheets from the roofs of La Rocar."
Likewise, the popular representatives want to know if the capital's Consistory has planned an adequate action protocol to avoid collapses and, if so, for the moment of removal of the sheets from the roofs.
In this sense, the PP affirms that "given the danger generated by the manipulation of asbestos, it is regulated that for the removal of the aforementioned Uralite sheets a qualified and authorized company must be used. In addition, a technical project is required for this, which must be authorized by the competent body."
The Popular Group in the Arrecife City Council will also ask the mayor if the City Council has noticed the partial or total collapse of some parts of the roof of the warehouses, without them having been removed yet.
